Young woman fighting vampires with a sword. That’s about all I knew about Blood: The Last Vampire going in. I did watch the original anime movie a few years ago, but obviously I didn’t retain much information about that. I think I liked it. So for all intents and purposes I went into this fresh.
The opening scene set the tone for what’s to come; the movie is well named. The following scene unfortunately set the tone for the acting and writing, which turned out to be reasonably competent at accomplishing what it sets out to do but also stilted. And when they made their appearance, the creature effects at times put me in mind of stop motion from two or three decades ago. For all those flaws though, it was an enjoyable enough movie for when you don’t want to have to think too much. I won’t watch it again, but neither do I want my hour and a half back.
