The Mummy is another classic horror movie that I’d never watched. The closest I’d gotten was the 1999 The Mummy and its sequel The Mummy Returns. Both which I like quite a lot (I just need to switch off my historical accuracy gland). I will even grudgingly accept The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor as reasonable entertainment if there’s nothing better to be had.
The original version of The Mummy is obviously a very different thing. Equally as enjoyable I’d say, but again, for different reasons. The mummy here isn’t a creature that feeds off the living and will bring about the end of the world. Rather, he is a much more human-like magician who has managed to return from the dead for the sake of love. That element is present in the modern remakes too, but here it is his sole motivation. And it makes for a stronger, more interesting character. You can sympathise with this lonely man doing terrible things to be reunited with his love.
